Exploring the wonderful world given to us.

Back once again…….

Ok… I’m going to pick my blog back up I think and keep everyone updated…. Either that, or I’ll just spout off some random rubbish….

Until next time…..

Sigma EX DG 24-70mm f2.8 on Canon 7D

For this blog I am going to show you an older lens made by Sigma.

I picked up my Sigma EX DG 24-70mm f2.8 a few years ago off ebay for about £250. I got it for my 400D to use for weddings because I couldn’t afford a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L lens.

Here is a stock image of the lens, as you can see, there’s no HSM on this lens, and the reason Sigma decided to have an 82mm filter thread on the top is beyond me, a 72mm thread would have worked perfectly fine. Also, on the Canon version, to switch from AF to MF you have to click the switch near the mount and also pull the focus ring back to get MF. The reverse zoom is also a little odd but I’m not going to review this for photography purposes.

From the standpoint of people looking for a zoom lens for fixed aperture for their HD-DSLR this is a great lens.

1. The price is great if you can get one second hand $350 off eBay for example.

2. The focus ring is really quite good. I’ve video on this lens, and racking focus and shooting on the run is quite nice with this lens

3. Being fixed aperture means you can zoom without having the exposure change

4. The bokeh on it looks nice in my opinion.

5. The f2.8 gives a nice shallow DOF

*Some video examples

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRjO4bIu8t8 – I shot most of this on my 7D with this lens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZIYA2-Pr38 – Again a lot of the footage used here was shot on my 7D with this Sigma Lens

There are some drawback on this lens, as mentioned, another is the included lens hood is a little worthless, and some people don’t like the lens flare this lens creates, I don’t see a big problem with it.

So all in all, I would recommend this lens for videoDSLR use, and would be less quick to recommend it for photography, but all in all its a great lens to start off with. I’ve personally shot thousands of pictures using this lens.

When building a RAID….

Just a quick note to people building their own RAIDs, or using Drobo’s and the likes. In the short term using consumer grade drives, for example WD Green Power, Caviar Black, Caviar Blue, you do save money on the initial build, but in the long run, costs will mount as drives fail.

What do I mean? Well, consumer grade drives are tested with some rather rigorous processes, but in the end, they are designed and tested to be used in consumer situations, home computers, laptops, DVRs and the likes, which in turn means they are designed to be used as a single drive for a select number of hours a day. You will notice Western Digital don’t quote MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) on the Green, Blue, or Black drives.

Switching over to Western Digital’s RE (RAID Edition) Enterprise range, you see a MTBF or 1.2 Million hours, you see how its affected by vibration, you see RAID and server based technologies included in the drive, and it is truly a 24/7 drive, I have about 25 WD RE drives, and mix of RE3s and RE4-GPs, and I have never lost a drive. Sure they are more expensive, but they are so worth it.

As a note, all RE drives come with 5-year warranty, as to Caviar Black’s, but Caviar Blue and Green Power come with 3-year warranties.

Some may say, ‘Oh, you sound like a Western Digital fan boy.’ And I would say this to them. I have had about 10 Seagate drives, 5 Samsung, and 6 Hitachi drives fail on me and lose all the data. In my opinion WD Enterprise drives are the best drives available.

Until Next time.

First blog…….Welll again

I used to have a blog, which I envisioned of becoming a great source of information and art…. Well as most things go, especially blogs, that kinda crashed and burned. I think the only person that read it was my mom, and that was only to tell me when I spelled something wrong or used run on sentences……Ahem.

So, this will be my official, unofficial first new blog. I hope you all enjoy it. It will be filled with all manner of camera, photographic, videographic (is that a word?)……Cool stuff…. It will be filled with cool stuff that will fill you with joy and joyesness.

For my first post, I will also include a pretty picture 😀

Until next time
